Vulnerability evaluation of distributed reputation management systems
2017
In distributed environments, Reputation Management Systems (RMSs) aim to estimate agents' trustworthiness by exploiting different sources of information. The distributed nature of these systems makes them vulnerable to several types of security attacks, and the response provided by a specific RMS depends on various factors, such as the algorithms adopted for estimating the reputation values and the communication protocols used to enable the cooperation among agents. This work examines the most important security attacks against RMSs and proposes a set of metrics for a quantitative evaluation of the RMS vulnerabilities. A parallel simulation framework is used to automatically give a vulnerab…
Evaluation Metric for Rate of Background Detection
2016
International audience; This paper proposes an evaluation metric which derive the effectiveness of background modeling algorithms. Background modeling is a key process on developing visual surveillance systems. The requirement of adapting to dynamic environments has motivated researchers to modify existing background modeling algorithms and develop new algorithms with better adaptability. Having the algorithms developed, credentials of each of the algorithms have to be assessed to exploit their effectiveness. Various evaluation metrics have been used for evaluating the rate of foreground extraction, foreground detection, and overall accuracy. However, the rate of background detection has no…
Serendipity in recommender systems
2018
The number of goods and services (such as accommodation or music streaming) offered by e-commerce websites does not allow users to examine all the available options in a reasonable amount of time. Recommender systems are auxiliary systems designed to help users find interesting goods or services (items) on a website when the number of available items is overwhelming. Traditionally, recommender systems have been optimized for accuracy, which indicates how often a user consumed the items recommended by system. To increase accuracy, recommender systems often suggest items that are popular and suitably similar to items these users have consumed in the past. As a result, users often lose interest…
Challenges of Serendipity in Recommender Systems
2016
Most recommender systems suggest items similar to a user profile, which results in boring recommendations limited by user preferences indicated in the system. To overcome this problem, recommender systems should suggest serendipitous items, which is a challenging task, as it is unclear what makes items serendipitous to a user and how to measure serendipity. The concept is difficult to investigate, as serendipity includes an emotional dimension and serendipitous encounters are very rare. In this paper, we discuss mentioned challenges, review definitions of serendipity and serendipity-oriented evaluation metrics. The goal of the paper is to guide and inspire future efforts on serendipity in r…
